this question of how to get lilypond running on leopard intel macs keeps cropping up on the mailing list. i finally got it working last week with the help of a few tips from the mailing list. more after the jump.

modern civilisation is going down the drain.

1. don’t smoke
2. do some sport
3. moderate alcohol consumption (1-14 units per week)
4. eat 5 helpings of fruit per day

1 & 2 are a check. 3 is getting there (14 units is 7 pints of beer per week!), but 4 will take some doing…

woohoo! austrian trains are now non-smoking areas. finally. now if they can modernise the rest of the fleet which doesn’t run on the main east-west transit route and sort out the catastrophic situation here in tyrol (that would be the subject for another rant), i’m a happy train traveller.

this is rather interesting. we europeans always claim that the americans know nothing about european geography. i challenge any brave readers to take this test of US geography. on my first try i hit 14/48. after 2 or 3 rounds i’d managed to remember enough to get about 33/48. but for the full 48, i had to use an atlas… at least now i know a bit more about the states…

Gallery caches some data that doesn’t change very often in its storage folder. This includes templates, data from the database and other things. To clear the cache in case something bad happened, browse to http://www.example.com/gallery/lib/support/index.php, enter your Gallery setup password, select “Cache Maintenance” and delete the caches. Usually, selecting all but the Thumbnails and resizes (derivative) cache is a good idea (repeat: do not select the Thumbnails and resizes cache for deletion, rebuilding it takes quite a while for large Galleries).

i selected the Thumbnails and resizes cache option, so the gallery will probably be slooooooooooow for a few days or longer, or until at least the thumbnails of all 16,236 pictures in 334 albums have been viewed. any volunteers? a further consequence is that the design of the gallery may look a bit cockeyed until the caching mechanism has realised that the thumbnails are no longer square. if in doubt, Ctrl+Shift+R the page and help us out…

short and simple. i use keyserver.mine.nu as my keyserver of choice, this server is part of the gpg server-ring, so the keys get transmitted round the network as well. $KEY_ID is the hexcode identifier of the key, mine is 0xD18B21DC, see the full listing here

of course, this implies that you have set up gpg to actually work on your system, you have a valid key and you are sure that you’re signing the correct key that you want to sign. for more information about all of that, have a look at http://gnupg.org
