about simon

boring version

DSC_0035simon lives and works in innsbruck. his numerous talents and hobbies include photography, music, diving, computers and sailing. he is currently employed as a systems administrator and programmer, however he spends most of his spare time behind a camera or a trombone. he enjoys not only capturing the essence of events, but also aims to perfectly preserve people on film, be it digital or it’s more esoteric predecessor, chemical.

most of his more interesting work is presented on his blog, interspersed with various other commentaries. alternatively, his flickr stream provides insight into his work.

slightly more tongue in cheek version

simon.bailey.at is operated by simon. simon—according to the book, binabik’s protegé—is also known in this electronic version of the world as binabik. both simon and binabik are two of the main protagonists from tad williams’ epic series memory, sorrow and thorn.

why call himself binabik, he hears you asking aloud. the answer is easy. he is simon, but calling himself that online was too obvious. so he took the next best name. binabik as a virtual gestalt was born. binabik, being a troll, however, is also an unintentional but rather neat side-swipe at all those ppl populating forums and newsgroups wanting to annoy other ppl and lovingly called ‘trolls’.

in the real world, simon is a systems administrator at the university of innsbruck. he mainly plays around with linux systems and makes sure that everything works for his colleagues in the research group he works for. other areas of expertise are anything web-related, databases and system security.

in his spare time simon fools around with all sorts of low brass instruments. normally trombone and its larger, more vulgar (depending who you ask) relation, the bass trombone. most of the rest of simon’s hobbies rotate around music and switching off the rest of the world as much as possible. simon also discovered photography sometime towards the end of 2006, and since then has been having lots of fun with cameras.
